What are mounting rails for solar modules?
The main focus of the solar mounting rails is on the application in the photovoltaic sector.
However, solar modules come from the family of system profiles and thus represent only one of many different applications of this type of profile.
Aluminum system profiles are used where the most diverse fastening and clamping work must be realized. The application is almost universal, which is why the system profiles are very popular among craftsmen.
Here, however, we focus exclusively on the mounting rails for solar modules.
The mounting rails are aluminum profiles specially designed for mounting solar panels on roofs of any kind. These mounting works on roofs are the main application of the photovoltaic rails.
However, since there are different roofs and application situations, and the conditions on site also vary, there are different rails for different works.
Usually up to 6 solar panels can fit on one rail, because the panels are about 1 meter wide and do not need any space between them. This is one of the reasons why solar mounting rails have a length of 6.1 to 6.5 meters as a small special feature. With other aluminum profiles, it is even the case that the 6m lengths are slightly shorter than 6 meters. This is due to the cutting of the hanging points for the coating.
So the solar profiles are usually longer than average.

Different coating options for the solar module mounting rails

It depends on whether the profiles can remain visible or whether they should "disappear" under the PV panels. It is usually the case that in low buildings, where the roofs are relatively close to the ground, more attention is paid to the appearance of the mounting rails and photovoltaic panels. In such cases, where the appearance of the solar mounting systems is more important, there is usually a desire for a dark, usually black, gray or stainless steel coating.
However, if it is, for example, a three-story building with a flat roof, the appearance of the mounting rails for the solar modules is of little relevance. At this point, the coating costs incurred for the aluminum profiles can be saved, because the rails are not visible from the ground anyway.
Since the aluminum mounting rails can withstand wind and weather without any problems, there are no protective benefits from anodizing, except that the aluminum will tarnish from contact with water. However, this does not affect the quality of the profiles, but only the appearance of the solar rails. However, in such cases, as already described, this is anyway invalid.

Like many other aluminum profiles, mounting rails for solar panels also find different names among craftsmen, architects and planners.

How the mounting rails are designated depends on several factors:
Firstly, the designation of aluminum profiles is usually location-dependent. One and the same profile can be designated differently in Northern Germany, Southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland respectively.
The second factor is generation: over time, new designations for aluminum profiles are added, complement others, replace them and "displace" them from the craft vocabulary.
For example, an experienced roofer in his mid-40s may refer to a mounting rail for solar modules as a "photovoltaic rail system," while the 22-year-old apprentice simply calls it a "PV rail."
